EXTRA SPECIAL THANKS! to realitywaiting for her help with the title. Thank you so much!

Gratefully stepping off of the overly crowded bus Jaejoong pauses and takes a deep breath. Summer is offically here! he thinks to himself with a grin. Not because the temperature was rising more and more every day or because the sun was shining and the air was fragrant with the scent of flowers and hot pavement. No, summer was here because finals were finally over. Classes were finished for the year and Jaejoong couldn't be happier.

With a spring in his step he sets off quickly, dodging other pedestrians who were in just as much of a hurry as he was. The cafe he worked in was only a few blocks away, but so was his apartment and he needed to stop there first. Humming quietly to himself Jaejoong starts to make a mental list of all the places where he might be able to get a second job.

Unlike most men his age, Jaejoong wasn't looking forward to lazy days and trips to the beach. The real reason Jae looked forward to summer was that he had more free time to work. More work meant more money and more money meant that he was one step closer to his dream.

Climbing the stairs to his apartment, Jaejoong went in, grabbed a tupperware container off of the spotless kitchen counter and headed out the door again checking his watch to make sure he wasn't late. The container was filled with moon cakes, freshly made by Jaejoong himself. Jaejoong was studying to be a chef. He could have graduated already, but he was also taking business courses. His dream was to open a restaurant and he wanted to be able to manage every aspect of it successfully.

This dream was the reason he worked so hard. Jae was saving money so that when he graduated, he'd be able to open his restaurant without having to rely on the help of his parents. Jaejoong knew that they would be more than happy to help him in the pursuit of his dream, but he wanted to do it on his own. His parents paid all of his and his brother's living and school related expenses so every won that Jaejoong earned got put into a savings account for the future.

He had wanted to pay for his schooling himself, but his parents had insisted and wouldn't be swayed. So in the end he said okay, but Jaejoong was determined that his restaurant would become a reality solely through his own endeavors.

Arriving at the Rising Sun Cafe Jaejoong enters to the jingle of the bell over the door. At once he spots his brother Junsu and Junsu's girlfriend Ye-ryeon in a booth to his left. Well...technically Junsu was Jaejoong's cousin, but ever since Junsu's parents died in a car accident when Su was five, he has lived with Jaejoong's family.

The day he called his Aunt and Uncle, Umma and Appa they called their lawyer and made it official. They had been waiting for Junsu to make that descision on his own. They put no pressure on him, just quietly let him know that it would be okay with them, but the paperwork to formally adopt Junsu had been prepared since the day he moved in. Jaejoong and Junsu were brothers in every way that mattered and Jaejoong hardly ever remembered that they were actually cousins. He loved Su as much as any one of their eight older sisters.

Making his way to Su's table Jae said,
"Hey, guys."

"Hey, Jaejoong."

"Hello Jaejoong oppa."

Jaejoong leaned over to kiss Ye-ryeon's cheek. Ye-ryeon was a pretty, sweet and funny girl and Jaejoong loved her completely. She and Su had been dating for almost a year and it hadn't taken long for her to win over his entire family. All the Kims loved her and knew that this was the perfect girl for Junsu. She and Junsu weren't just boyfriend and girlfriend, they were best friends. Jaejoong knew that Su couldn't imagine his life without her in it.

"What do you have there Jae?" Junsu asked, gesturing towards the tupperware container in Jaejoong's hands. "More food for Min?"

"Yeah, moon cakes.", Jaejoong replied, offering them the container. Jaejoong pointed at the different designs on the top of the cakes, "The ones with the ovals are red bean paste, the ones with a leaf are mango and the ones with the stars are pineapple."

They each took a moon cake and handed the dish back to Jae.

"You make the best moon cakes, Oppa!"

Biting into the sweet treat Junsu was amused to see his girlfriend fangirling over Jaejoong's moon cakes. Understandable though. Jaejoong is an amazing cook. Junsu thought proudly. It was a good thing too, since Su couldn't cook to save his (or anybody else's) life. If Junsu didn't share an apartment with Jae, take-out would be the only thing standing between him and a slow death by starvation.

"Su, I thought we'd barbeque this weekend to kind of celebrate the start of summer. What do you think?"

Junsu could see the excited look in his girlfriend's eyes, she knew she had an open invitation and Jaejoong always cooked enough food for an army.

"I don't know....." Su pretended to think it over until he felt a sharp pain in his shin where Ye-ryeon had kicked him. "Ow!"

"Su thinks that's a wonderful idea Jaejoong Oppa." Ye-ryeon gave Jaejoong her best 1000 watt smile. Jaejoong just snickered at Junsu's pain. Traitor. Su thought.

Turning to Ye-ryeon Jae asked her,
"So, have you taken your finals yet?"

She nodded.
"Nae, I took the last one this morning. I'm sure I passed everything, my classes this semester were pretty easy. How about you?"

Jae nodded,
"Just finished." Jerking a thumb in Junsu's direction Jaejoong said,
"If Su weren't such a lazy bum, he'd be done, too."

"Yeah, then he could take me to the amusement park." Junsu just rolls his eyes as his oh-so-mature girlfriend sticks her tongue out at him. In a tone that suggested that he was only stating the obvious Su said,

"Morning is for sleeping! If I signed up for morning lectures I'd never make it to my classes. By taking them in the afternoon I get to sleep in and my attendance doesn't suffer. It's not laziness, it's efficient time management."

Exchanging disgusted looks with Ye-ryeon at Junsu's self-satisfied smirk, Jaejoong reaches out and pokes him in the head.

Waving at the couple Jaejoong heads toward Changmin who is behind the counter, helping a customer.

Turning back from waving goodbye to Jaejoong Ye-ryeon smiles sweetly at Junsu which immediately makes him suspicious.

"Well, if you HAD signed up for morning classes you would be done now and instead of having your finals to look forward to you could be looking forward to taking me to Lotte World." Ye-ryeon's sweet smile turned evil.
"Instead, I'll be going with Yuri Unni."

Junsu sits up straight in his seat and whines,
"You're going to go without me? What kind of girlfriend are you?!"

"I'm a girlfriend with a lazy bum for a boyfriend. Just ask Jaejoong Oppa." Still smiling, she leaned over the table to pinch Junsu's cheek.
"Don't cry baby, Umma will win you a teddy bear." She pats his cheek twice and slides out of the booth. Waving at Jae and Min she calls out,
"Gotta go, don't want to keep Unni waiting!"

With a roll of his eyes and a long suffering sigh Junsu follows her out of the cafe.

Turning to Jaejoong as soon as his customer was gone Min asked,
"Whadjabringme? Whadjabringme? Oooooh, moon cakes!"

"How on Earth can you possibly know that?! I haven't even opened the container yet!"

"I can smeeeell them." Min started making grabby hand motions towards the tupperware container, arms straight out in front of him.

Shaking his head and smiling at his best friend's bizarreness when it comes to food, Jaejoong wordlessly handed Min the moon cakes.

He and Min had started working at the Rising Sun at about the same time. Changmin was two years younger than Jaejoong, but in the same year at college. Min was super smart and had worked hard, skipping two years of High school. They had known each other for four years now and were the best of friends. It began with their mutual love of food. Jaejoong loved to create it and Min loved to eat it. Almost as soon as they met Changmin became Jaejoong's culinary guinea pig. At his own insistance. He wouldn't take no for an answer and soon it was Jaejoong's habit to bring food for Min whenever they were working together.

Watching Min as he started petting and crooning creepily to the moon cakes (Fear not my pretty ones...heheheh),

Jaejoong noted with concern that Changmin looked exhasted.

"Min. You look tired. Didn't you sleep last night?"

Around a mouthful of moon cake Changmin tells Jaejoong about how grueling his finals were. He hasn't slept for two days. Jaejoong is horrified, but used to this. Changmin was pre-med and all the pre-med students went through this. Jaejoong knew it was just a warm up for when Changmin actually became an intern. Having seen Min and his classmates stumble out of an all night study session made Jaejoong glad that med students couldn't write their own prescriptions. The amount of caffeine they ingested was dangerous enough.

Knowing that Changmin won't go home early, Jaejoong makes him promise to go to sleep as soon as his shift was over.

"You're going to make yourself sick."

"If I get sick, I'll have your jook to look forward to."

"You don't have to make yourself sick for me to..make...you...OMO! Did you eat ALL those moon cakes already?!"

With the tinkling of the overhead bell, Junsu re-enters the cafe having just seen Ye-ryeon safely away in a taxi. Approaching a grinning Min and a shocked Jaejoong, Junsu asks them if they want to go to a club tonight.
"To celebrate the end of finals."

The other two agree and Jaejoong and Changmin make plans to meet up and share a taxi.

"I've got to go." Su tells them, noticing the time. They wave as he heads out the door.

The Rising Sun Cafe was a small, neighborhood establishment. They didn't get a lot of new customers. Their clientele were mostly regulars. People who lived nearby and had been coming there for years.

Yunho didn't live nearby, but he'd been coming almost everyday for about the last six months. Walking in through the glass front door Yunho headed to his usual spot, a booth in the back with a clear view of the rest of the cafe.

Hearing the ringing of the bell over the door, Changmin looks up to see that Yunho is back. Watching the older man take his customary seat Min can see out of the corner of his eye that Yunho's gaze immediately finds Jaejoong.

"You've got a customer", Grinning, Min says indicating Yunho, "I think you have a secret admirer." He says it jokingly, but Jaejoong just nods.

"I know."

"What?! Are you serious? I was just kidding." Glancing from Yunho to Jaejoong, a wicked grin unfurls itself across Changmin's lips.

"You know what? That Jung Yunho is a good looking guy. Maybe you should give him a chance. He looks like he's in shape. Probably works out a lot." Min wiggled his eyebrows suggestively. "Lots of stamina."

Grinning at his friend Changmin makes a slightly obscene, graphic gesture with his hands.

Shaking his head at the leer on his friend's face Jae says dryly,
"Yeah...I don't think so. Exit only."

Changmin's voice turns "seductive" as he puts his hands on Jaejoong's hips.
"Baaaby, Yu-nho you want it."

Jaejoong gives an involuntary snort of laughter at Min's greasiness and slaps his hands away.
Gathering up menus and various other things while Changmin continues to snicker at his own joke Jaejoong says,

"Yunho does like me though. I think it's the only reason he comes here." Grimacing he adds,"Yunho is shy. He's never said anything about his feelings, but I think he is trying to get up the courage to confess to me and I just dread it."

Min is curious,
"Why? It shouldn't be any different than saying no to a girl who likes you." Thinking of the slew of females at school who were in love with his friend he adds dryly, "Something you've had plenty of experience at."

"It's worse." Jaejoong shakes his head, "And it's not because he's a guy. It's because no matter what I say I'm going to end up hurting him and I feel like Yunho has been hurt before. A lot."

"What makes you think that?"

Jaejoong shrugs, "His eyes are sad even when he smiles."

Watching Jaejoong smile gently at Yunho, Changmin thinks that this is why he loves Jae. His compassion. So many men would be disgusted by Yunho's interest and treat him with contempt and cruelty, especially in front of their friends. But not Jaejoong.

Min had thought, going into medicine, that he would meet a lot of really compassionate people. People who wanted nothing more than to help their fellow man. Changmin had been bitterly disappointed when he realized that most of his classmates were only going into medicine for money or prestige or because their parents expected it of them. To them it was just another type of labor. Something to slog through until it was time to clock out. Jaejoong was more compassionate than most of them put together and while it made him love his friend all the more, it made him sad as well.

As he makes his way over to Yunho's table to take the man's order Jaejoong thinks about how he would probably like Yunho and they could be friends if it weren't for the fact that Yunho was interested in him. It wasn't even that Yunho was gay and Jaejoong wasn't. It was knowing that he was just going to end up hurting the other man that made Jaejoong keep his distance. He didn't like hurting people.

"Hey, Yunho. Are you ready to order or are you waiting for someone?"

"Um. Hi, Jaejoong. I'm waiting for Donghae. He should be here anytime."

"How did your finals go?" Jaejoong asked as he set out menus and glasses of water.

"Good." Yunho looks down shyly, fiddling with his napkin. "Actually, I've graduated. Donghae too."

"That's great Yunho! Congratulations! What were you studying?"

"Oh. Um. Ed..education." Yunho is a little dazed at getting Jaejoong's full grin directed at him.

"So you're a teacher? Is Donghae a teacher too?"

Yunho nodded.
"What about you?"

"I still have a semester to go."

"You're studying to be a chef, right?"

"Then why don't you cook instead of waiting tables?", Yunho is curious, but glad that the other man is a waiter. If he was a cook Yunho never would have met him.

"You get better tips waiting tables."

They both looked over at the door as the bell signalled a new arrival.

"Your friend is here. I'll come back after he's had a chance to look at the menu.", smiling at Donghae as they passed each other, Jaejoong made his way back behind the counter.

As he walked by Jaejoong Donghae thought to himself that he could definitely see what attracted Yunho to Jaejoong. Physically, Jaejoong was, well...beautiful. Donghae didn't like men, but even he could see Jaejoong's allure. He could also see that Jaejoong was straight and he knew his friend was just asking to have his heart broken.

"Hey, Hae."

"Hey, Ho."

It was their customary greeting and the stupidity of it made them grin at each other like idiots. They've known each other for several years and were just as close as brothers. Donghae was the only person Yunho felt close to.

"Did you order yet?"

"Nooo. I've been waiting for you.", Yunho's tone indicated that he'd been there for quite a long time and that Donghae was a tardy and inconsiderate ass. The truth was that Yunho always got there early so that he had time to watch Jaejoong before his friend showed up.

Being completely cognizant of this fact, Donghae snorted.
"You're just mad that I didn't take longer. Soooo sooorrry that I'm not as pretty as Jaejoong-the-incredible-waiter-boy."

Knowing that his friend was teasing him, Yunho made moon eyes in Jaejoong's direction. (An exaggeration of the expression that Yunho refused to admit to himself was usually on his face when looking at Jaejoong.)

"He IS pretty isn't he?" Yunho cooed, complete with a dreamy sigh.

Donghae snorted again.
"It's scary how natural that look is on you.", Watching Yunho as he laughed quietly Donghae wanted to know something.

"Jaejoong is pretty. Beautiful even. Hell, I wish I had a girlfriend as pretty as he is, but is that the only thing you see in him? I mean, you don't really know him, right?"

Knowing the concern that motivated Donghae's question, Yunho answered in all seriousness,
"I know enough."

Donghae shot him a look, raised eyebrows indicating that more details were required.

Not sure he can make Donghae understand, Yunho was quiet for a minute.

"He's...warm. And kind. And...I feel...calm, I guess, when I'm around him. At peace. When I see him, I don't hurt as much."

Yunho twirls his spoon as he tries to put his feelings into words. "He makes me feel like...like it's possible to be happy."

"Yunho." Donghae's voice was gentle,"You know he isn't gay, right?"

Yunho nods and says quietly,
"I know."

"Then why do you do this to yourself? If he finds out he'll just end up hurting you."

"Oh, he knows."

Donghae is surprised.
"What? You told him?"

Yunho shakes his head, "No, but I can tell that he knows. I've watched him, watched him with other customers and he is always a little...reserved, with me." Fiddling with the salt shaker Yunho adds, almost to himself, "I'm sure he knows."

Donghae doesn't know what to say. Reaching across the table he takes Yunho's hand and gives it a comforting squeeze.

Being a good friend he says,
"Well, it's his loss."

That made Yunho laugh. Smiling, Donghae decided to try and get Yunho's mind off of Jaejoong.
"Let's go out tonight. I passed a club on the way here that looks interesting. We'll celebrate Seoul acquiring two new molders of our Nation's youth."

"How do you make that sound so creepy?"

Why you would want to resize the Jaejoong scan is beyond me. And your Changmin photo--those hips are instant death!

Really got into the conversation between Yunho and Donghae. It's interesting how you've already dispelled a number of possible plot twists right here at the beginning (i.e., Yunho knows Jae isn't gay, Jae already knows Yunho's unspoken feelings). These are intelligent, aware characters--quite different from the usual bewildered, hormone-crazed highschoolers in many other fics.

"I've watched him, watched him with other customers and he is always a little...reserved, with me." Fiddling with the salt shaker Yunho adds, almost to himself, "I'm sure he knows."

Quite real-life.

Well, I've just launched into this story--onwards to more!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it! XD
